Japan TrenchLocated in the Ring of Fire the Japan trench extends from the Kuril Islands to the Bonin islands. The deepest point of the trench is 9,000 meters (29,500 feet). Because of the subduction zone around the trench there have been a number of large earthquakes that have caused chaos in Japan. Since 1973 there have been 9 earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 or greater in this area. The largest recorded earthquake in this area was a 7.8 magnitude that killed 3 people and left hundreds injured.
